Starting with the local Wappo people that lived in the Calistoga area for thousands of years, it has been a region full of diverse cultures and history. Mexican settlers created a farming and ranching community, with grist mills and lumber adding to the economy of the area. When Sam Brannon arrived, he wished to pull tourists to the small town for his hot spring resort. More spas appeared, Lincoln Ave. was built, and the railroad connected Calistoga to the ferries that arrived from San Francisco.

Incorporated as a city in 1876, Calistoga’s rich history includes visits from the famous writer, Robert Louis Stevenson, that wrote the Silverado Squatters in regards to his adventures of living near the local abandoned silver mine. Many tourists and celebrities have followed to experience Napa Valley Wine and the magic of Calistoga mud baths.
